One of the oldest horse races still run in the United State, the Travers Stakes are scheduled Aug. 23 and feature many of the top three-year-old thoroughbred horses in the nation. Those horses that remain three in May also might be among the favorites in the 2015 Kentucky Derby. Regardless, the current field at the Travers Stakes offers many of the best horses and the best trainers, jockeys and stables in the United States. The race is run over 1- furlongs on a left-handed dirt track. Only horses that are three years of age and bred in the United States can run, and winning the Travers Stakes is very prestigious with a purse that tops $1.25 million.
